Dusk HD Review
Dusk, a shooter game by David Szymanski in 2018, was at the forefront of the retro FPS trend and remains challenging today. Just five years after its launch, the creators of Dusk are allowing players to make it less retro. Dusk HD was recently showcased at the Realms Deep event, following a 2022 PC Gaming Show teaser.
Exciting Content
According to Dave Oshry, the head of New Blood, Dusk HD initially began as remakes of the game’s weapons and enemies. These remakes were intended to be released as packs on the Steam Workshop for Dusk. The goal was to provide players with exciting content when the game launched. The original pitch is similar to Half-Life: Blue Shift or HD weapon packs for Deus Ex that are made every few years. However, it changed after that.
Oshry explained that a community member named ‘Garumin’ approached them after being inspired by what he saw and expressed a desire to remake everything else. All textures, models, and assets. It was a crazy task. But he had already begun, and his work was good.
HD Texture Pack
Garumin was hired to continue the work and even improved unfinished weapons and assets for the final game. Oshry believes that almost all the assets in Dusk have been remade. The last step for the project is to ensure the new assets all “fit” together. It is insurance against the bad HD texture pack vibe. They are aiming for the Halo 2 Anniversary, not Halo 1 Anniversary. It involves adjusting texel densities, updating textures, modifying weapon models and textures, revising weapon models, updating enemy models, and enhancing enemy textures. It’s a lot.
Graphics
I don’t think Dusk HD will feel like a bad graphics overhaul from the Fallout 3 Nexus. The screens and footage released so far look great, and the models capture the spirit of the original art. I like the new HD rework of my favorite Dusk weapon, the broadsword. The HD version has an excellent Conan the Barbarian vibe with jagged edges and runes.
If you don’t like Dusk HD, that’s okay. You can download it through the Steam Workshop. If it gets positive feedback, it might become an in-game console version option.
Dusk HD will have a detailed trailer on Halloween and is expected to be released around December 10. New Blood had more to show at Realms Deep. They revealed a new gameplay trailer for the immersive sim Fallen Aces, which will be released in 2024.
