Blood West, created by Hyperstrange, is a fresh addition to the world of stealth shooters. Although it’s not precisely like Splinter Cell or the Hitman franchise, it does share some similar elements. The game was in early access for a long time, but now the full version is out. The game has many advantages.
Even though I’m not a big fan of stealth shooters, I enjoyed playing Blood West. Now, let’s continue with the review!
The plot of Blood West is full of lurking monsters
The game’s premise is straightforward. You are a gunslinger who got buried by a shaman. But the land spirits have different ideas. They’ve revived you to find and eliminate the source of evil.
The game is split into three stages. In the beginning, you’ll be in an abandoned town in a canyon. The second stage is in the bayou, and the final stage is in the mountains. During these three stages, you will encounter various types of monsters. Some can be easily distracted, while others are more challenging to divert.
The enemy AI is good, so focus on one enemy at a time. Avoid dealing with groups of them, especially in the early stages of the game. In the future, when you have better weapons, it will be easier to defeat groups of enemies. However, I still recommend against doing so.
You have many options to deal with these enemies, so feel free to get creative. As you play the game, you’ll find notes about the monsters. Be sure to read them! These notes contain helpful information on how to avoid or kill monsters quickly.
Like all horror survival games, ammo is limited. Make sure every shot you take counts. You can get them from traders or find them in houses and caves. But if you want to use them often, you must be accurate with headshots.
Blood West has a different approach to inventory slots
Blood West had a fascinating inventory design. In many games, you’ll find inventories with items listed and numbered in the lower right corner. Some also use a grid format.
Blood West uses a grid format, but items can occupy multiple grid spaces simultaneously. If your inventory is complete, you can rearrange the items like a Tetris puzzle to create more space. The inventory size can be expanded, which is a relief.
You can only equip two weapons at a time in the game. It would help to decide what you want and don’t use. You can easily change weapons during gameplay without pausing the game.
Additionally, you can sell it for extra gold if you don’t need a specific weapon. Making some extra money on the side is a great idea.
Blood West offers exceptional dark Western music
When choosing a game, I focus on the music as one of the main factors. The background score in Blood West enhances the dark atmosphere created by the visuals.
The monsters also have audio cues, helping you locate their positions. The audio segment fits well with the rest of the game. There are no jump scares, but the music and ambient sounds can give you chills occasionally.
The images are blurry, and there is a lot of violence. Blood West has low poly graphics, giving it a retro vibe. The game’s visuals, sound design, and gameplay are so good that it’s difficult to stop playing.
Conclusion
The game has many great features. Everything, from the music to the inventory management, is just right. The main issue I noticed was the need for well-spaced checkpoints. If you die, you have to go back and redo things; if you die three times, you get cursed, weakening your character.
The curse doesn’t affect gameplay much; it just adds a challenge. But the backtracking can be annoying. In addition, the game includes some RPG elements where you can allocate skill points to specific skills.
Yes, the game does have power creep, but it is balanced and spread out effectively. You begin as a player with difficulty defeating enemies but gradually become a fearless warrior of the dark. You are only one skill point away from becoming an unstoppable force.
