Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales Review
I’m not really into superheroes, but I like Miles Morales. I want him better than Peter Parker’s versions. He’s more exciting and relatable.
The same feeling applies to their games. Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a fantastic mini-sequel and spinoff to Insomniac’s 2018 web-slinging game. According to Rick Lane’s Spider-Man review, the game’s port is primarily good, just like the game itself. Miles Morales’s PC port is mostly good, but there is some bad news. The good news is that it’s a much better game.
Miles Morales is easier to play than the previous version. There’s less to do, but most of it benefits Miles and New York. The game has been streamlined with fewer sidequests and a shorter story than the previous version. Miles Morales delivers a tighter and more intense storyline, making it a perfect opportunity.
The Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales story starts with a summary, keeping me updated on Miles’ current situation. The story is about a teenager juggling his family life after his father’s death and his responsibilities as Spider-Man. At the same time, the original Spider-Man takes a winter vacation. Miles gets caught up in a web-slinging adventure when he finds himself in a conflict between Roxxon Corporation and the Underground, a tech-savvy criminal gang led by the Tinkerer. It has a lot of predictable moments, like those in superhero stories. The game does an excellent job developing its characters, making the expected moments more emotional and easier to forgive.
Let’s go for a drive
Insomniac has made being Spider-Man even cooler in the engaging story. The developer has improved the already great web-slinging mechanics in the snow-covered replica of Peter Parker’s New York, making it even more satisfying. I feel better at wallrunning and navigating buildings now. I initially used the controller for movement, but I tried using the keyboard and was pleasantly surprised by how well the developer Nixxes translated the controls. After some practice, it became as easy to use as a Dualsense.
Both Spideys beat up bad guys in a similar way, but Miles has a few extra things that make him different. Miles can use his Venom abilities to shake up combat by dealing burst electrical damage to enemies. The punches feel strong, and the camera work excites the fights. Overall, the core moveset stays the same. While it’s not necessarily a negative, those seeking major changes in combat may be let down.
Miles still has to do a lot of stealth missions. He must carefully balance on poles and beams and quietly capture enemies without being seen. I don’t like them, and I get tired of constantly checking if each enemy is safe for a stealth takedown. I often gave up and joined the fight, enjoying the satisfaction of taking down a group of Underground goons with my Venom Smash.
Miles Morales is coming to PC from PlayStation 5, and the game looks fantastic. The port looks beautiful, maybe even better. I had some problems with aliasing, especially during cutscenes. During my time in New York, I encountered a few graphical bugs. These included textures needing to load correctly and Miles being absent during loading screens, resulting in web gaps.
I had a lot of trouble with frame drops and crashing. I had trouble with my rig when using ray-tracing options. Even when I turned them off, I still experienced framerate issues during combat and moving around. It crashed a few times but is not a big problem because of auto-saving. But starting the game multiple times in one night got a little frustrating. The good thing is there are many graphical options to play with. I could play on high settings with minimal issues by reducing traffic and turning off ray tracing, except for occasional crashes.
I suggest playing Insomniac’s first Spider-Man game because it complements the story of this game well. If you’re looking for a fun time in snowy New York, swinging past tall buildings and defeating villains, Miles Morales is the Spider-Man for you. It is the hero’s best adventure so far and won’t take up much of your time.
