BeamNG.drive Review
In 1994, I played Papyrus’ NASCAR Racing for the first time. I was amazed to find out that if I crashed my car, it would show damage. I turned my car around and started driving in the opposite direction on the track. The other cars tried to avoid me, but their algorithm couldn’t keep up. I got hooked. I’ve never won a race, but caused some epic virtual wreckage.
BeamNG.drive: It’s All About Crashing
Twenty-five years later, we have BeamNG.drive, a video game solely focused on crashing. BeamNG.drive is not a racing game. It is a soft-body physics simulator that can accurately show real-time damage to objects, such as cars. The handling behavior is modeled realistically. The handling is fantastic, but the crashes are amazing. The metal bends, windows shatter, and hubcaps and headlights go flying. BeamNG.drive is not mentioned or covered by the IIHS.
The BeamNG developers want to sell their simulation software to other industries. But for now, we have an incredibly awesome driving game. BeamNG.drive is a driving game that encourages crashes, unlike other games where crashes are penalized.
Some game-like activities in BeamNG involve completing time trials or chasing virtual bad guys. I think the best way to enjoy the game is to go out and crash.
The Only Limit Is Your Imagination
BeamNG.drive makes it incredibly easy. All maps are open-world with a free-roam mode. To begin, start with the Gridmap. It’s a playground filled with blocks, ramps, and jumps. You can race through it at top speeds, crashing into, going over, and launching off obstacles. If your computer is powerful enough, you can select a realistic driving map like a big American city, a cozy Italian town, the Utah countryside, or a tropical island. Then, just let things happen naturally (meaning, you might end up sliding off the road and crashing into a huge tree). Maps usually include dirt roads, trails, and obstacles for off-roading. These features are accurately represented in the map.
To cause maximum destruction quickly, choose the Cliff map, drive your car off the edge, and let gravity take over. The game allows you to record and watch your epic crashes in slow motion from different angles.
You have more options than just crashing into walls. You can summon AI traffic and cause chaos, crush your classic low-rider into a cube with a big transparent compactor. There is also an option to adjust gravity to be as strong as the sun, which would flatten most cars before they even start moving.
Do you want to raise a high cement truck and let it fall onto a city bus? Yes, you can do that. Want to destroy your gorgeous 1950s classic car by driving it into a massive spinning contraption? BeamNG.drive has got you covered. Do you want to go a small car into a piano?
Killer Car Selection
BeamNG.drive offers a variety of fictional cars, trucks, and SUVs that resemble real-life models. The vehicles vary in size and function. On one end, there’s the small and delicate Autobello Piccolina, similar to a Fiat 500, with a rear engine. On the other end, there’s the massive Gavril T-Series heavy-duty truck, which comes with dump and cement mixer bodies. You can find various cars from different eras and countries, like 1950s classics, Japanese econoboxes, German performance cars, and even a unique three-wheeler called the Ibishu Pigeon. The default vehicle in BeamNG, the Gavril D-Series pickup, has been around since 2015 and has been through a lot.
The current version has 26 vehicles of different types, and many more cars, maps, and scenarios can be downloaded from the BeamNG mods site. If you have a dark sense of humor, you can even include crash test dummies or a Stig in your cars. BeamNG.drive contains tools for creating a world where cars can be destroyed.
The Downside: Slow Computers Need Not Apply
BeamNG.drive has a couple of downsides. Firstly, it is only compatible with Windows computers. Additionally, you’ll need a powerful computer to fully enjoy the game’s advanced features, like multiple AI-controlled vehicles or high-resolution graphics for detailed maps. You’ll need a dedicated gaming desktop to achieve smooth performance, like in BeamNG’s demo video. On average, work laptops will only run at lower resolutions. (Disclaimer: I’m not speaking from personal experience, in case our IT folks are reading this.)
The cars are made to feel like real driving, so they can be hard to control without a steering wheel or gamepad. Objects outside the car are usually fixed and cannot be easily bent or changed. It means that if you crash your 18-wheel tractor-trailer into a light pole, it could wrap around it because the pole is not very strong. Similarly, hitting the tables at a sidewalk cafe with your sedan could cause significant damage and potentially “total” your car.
Creating a thrilling crash simulation takes time, but the actual action is short-lived. You can save time and money by watching YouTube channels dedicated to BeamNG.drive crashes. There are many channels available for this purpose. It is one of my favorite things.
The game is still in progress and considered “early access.” The team regularly releases free updates with more cars, improved scenery, and other improvements. The instructions are minimal, and the interface could be easier to learn. You may need to search online to understand the game fully.
